Director Hany Abu-Assad brings us the story of two strangers (Ben, played by Idris Elba and Alex, played by Kate Winslet) who, after surviving a plane crash in the snow- covered Colorado Rockies must forge a connection to survive the extreme elements. When they realise help is not coming, they are forced to embark on a perilous journey across the wilderness while learning about themselves and each other along the way.

Based on a book by Charles Martin, this film fails to bring the realities of either aspect: survival and romance, to a satisfying conclusion.

This movie is beautifully acted and filmed. I think the casting for this was perfect and makes the movie work really well. Some may complain about the pacing of the film, that is one of the things I enjoyed most about the film. It gives you a chance to settle into the movie and get to know the characters, without being bored. The characters are different and their differences are well played out and described, then you see a shift and this is what makes this a really really good movie and a remarkable love story.

Print/Audio Quality

The print is presented in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 with a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The film was shot mainly in the wintery mountains taking center stage. Black levels hold up rather well without any issues which I would have expected some crush, but none was there. Color is good in some parts of the film and feels rather dull in others. There are also moments though where the transfer does lack in a few areas. Overall I was fairly impressed with this print.
Print Quality: 9.5/10

The audio is presented in a DTS-HD MA lossless 5.1 mix. The soundfield is immersive at all times no matter if it is the special effects or dialogue. I was literally amazed with the amount of dynamic panning from each speaker in the rears. Bass was punchy. Dialogue is also well placed in the center channel sounding crisp and clear. The best part of this all around aggressive soundtrack is that it is well balanced between the dialogue and sound effects.

Final Thoughts

This is a pretty good, solidly done and entertaining movie that is solidly made and solidly crafted. Idris Elba & Kate Winslet give their solid as usual performances as Ben Bass & Alex Martin.
