Based on the characters from Archie Comics, Riverdale gives a subversive take on small-town life. Things aren’t always what you expect in Riverdale. As a new school year begins, the town is reeling from the tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom. The summer’s events made all-American teen Archie Andrews realize that he wants to pursue a career in music, but his fractured friendship with Jughead Jones, and Josie McCoy’s focus on her own band leaves Archie without a mentor. Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper is not ready to reveal her true feelings for Archie, and new student, Veronica Lodge, has an undeniable spark with her crush. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom, Riverdale’s Queen Bee, who stirs up trouble amongst Archie, Betty and Veronica. But is Cheryl hiding something about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there’s more to the story.

‘Riverdale’ takes the hometown of the Archie comic’s cast of characters, and transforms it into a show influenced by the many, many television murder mystery/crime shows out there on the television market. Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Cheryl and Kevin are all here; but the story they’re taking part in is not just the typical teen-stuff of its ilk. ‘Riverdale’ takes an otherwise charming, funny and colourful comic and turns the setting of it into a somber drama that brings about some very interesting twists in the Archie cast.

Cheryl Blossom’s brother, Jason, is missing in the first episode and the town of Riverdale is starting to get worried that he may in fact be dead. Archie and company are all equally affected by this news, and they’re all struggling to cope with this stress in their own ways. Archie is struggling to maintain his relationship with Betty when Veronica Lodge movies into Riverdale. What is he to do in this scenario? ‘Riverdale’ is an interestingly done take on the Archie series and it works. It has enough teen drama and mystery to entertain both crowds; though it’s not necessarily the perfect cup of tea for strict ‘mystery’ buffs out there.

Final Thoughts

I enjoyed this take on Archie in ‘Riverdale’, I like it because it is grittier than the comic, it is clearly Twin Peaks influenced. The story-line is intriguing and pushes the boundaries of a typical teen murder drama without being predictable or jeopardizing the integrity of the characters.
