‘Moana’ is a beautiful and stunning film, the best parts of the film being the animation and the music, of course with Lin-Manuel MIranda on board this project. I thought that it was really great that Disney decided to venture to a more different model for their Disney princesses brand and to explore a culture as fascinating as the Polynesian culture.
The end result a brilliant film that is really just a fun exciting adventure. The voice acting was stellar both from new comer Auli’i or Dwayne Johnson and it was really great seeing their two characters on screen bonding and getting used to working together. ‘Moana’ is a startling film on a bunch of levels. The animation is not only magically crafted, it also has a great amount of variety and stunning beauty–no Disney film has ever fallen in love with its setting as much as this one. ‘Moana’ also has an excellent musical score that pays great homage to the culture that it depicts with use of native instruments and choral stylistic elements. The music in the film was fun and catchy with very meaningful lyrics without being too in your face and having the characters break into song every scene, the musical pieces were used sparingly and reasonably.
Movie Content: 10/10
The print is presented in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 with a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. ‘Moana’ on Blu-ray offers vibrant colors and excellent detail. This is quite an impressive s animated film on Blu-ray. With a strong color palette, it brings out the fine details. Black colors are deep looking. Taking all these strong elements, they produce one sharp looking picture. Especially any scenes that involved the ocean water really showed just how life like the water felt. We have an almost 3D look with the film even though this version is not in 3D.
On to the 3D portion of the video review and I will say that the 3D portion of this film outclasses many animated films in 3D. I am happy to report that Disney has done a great job with the way the 3D has been incorporated where I felt like I was actually in the 3D field. Where this film shines in 3D is with the excellent details. You can see some excellent textures on the planes themselves that makes the 3D feel appropriate here and not used as a gimmick. Colors are strong and bold that hold up very well throughout. Blacks are comic book inky. I didn’t notice any ghosting in the image either as I have with other films in 3D which can become very distracting. There are no issues with the 3D such as noise, artifacts, or banding which I have experienced with a few other films in 3D.
Video Quality: 10/10
The audio mix is presented in DTS HD 7.1 Master Audio lossless track. All I can say is that ‘Moana’ sounds amazing filling the entire soundfield when the cast is singing which there was some really catchy songs. The introduction of the film shows you how awesome this film sounds in lossless. ‘Moana’ takes advantage of the soundfield with the rears actually getting a good workout with the soundtrack and effects. The sound effects are quite impressive in themselves. Dialogue is crystal clear and music is just as clear.
