MAJOR CRIMES returns with more mysteries in season five as the squad must solve some of the most challenging homicides in America’s second largest city. From searching for a missing teenage girl who vanished while helping the homeless, hunting down the killer of a potentially dirty cop or following up on a beheading in an isolated corner of Los Angeles, the investigators attempt to return balance to the scales of justice. Also this season, Sharon strives to push Rusty through college while figuring out where she wants to go in her ongoing romance with Andy Flynn; Julio Sanchez decides to try to adopt a child himself; Provenza develops sensitivities related to his new marriage to Patrice (Dawnn Lewis); Buzz Watson picks up the 30-year-old murder investigation of his father and uncle; Mike Tao wins an award for his work as a Hollywood consultant; and Amy Sykes confronts the idea of motherhood versus focusing on her career.

Many of the characters are “old friends,” from “The Closer” show. The story lines are clever and relevant to today, the dialogue is good. Glitzy LA looks “real” to me, though what-do-I-know-not-much. There is plenty of action but not icky, gratuitous violence. There are on-going story lines about characters (examples: Julio wants to be a foster parent; Tao has a tv consulting deal) which are interesting to me. I have no idea if they are off-putting to a new viewer. If you keep watching you’ll easily “get” them. In “The Closer,” nobody liked Captain Sharon Raydor, and she is the lead in “Major Crimes.” It took a while for me to warm up to her.

Season 5 addresses those topics that are slamming us in our daily life. Also those topics that have been with us in a lesser way, but presented in
a timely way. ISIS, terrorism, gay relationships, foster children, adoption. Major Crimes presents a sensitive view of these and other topics. The Major Crimes squad has become a close family–a tight knit community. We view each one’s quirks and how the team reacts to them. I have a gay son. I hope that he will find a Gus. Sharon and Andy’s budding relationship is beautiful–sensitive and right. Buzz has an in house support group

Final Thoughts

I love this series. At first after watching The Closer I wasn’t sure that I could live with a new chief but I gave it a try since I like all the characters in the show and I’m glad I did. Still watching 5 seasons in. The show has heart and humor and a great cast. Definitely one of my top favorite series of all time.
