longwaydowndvd‘Long Way Round’ was an excellent one-off adventure documentary starring Ewan McGregor and long-time friend Charley Boorman (son of director John Boorman). Both McGregor and Boorman traveled from England to New York on their motorcycles. This time around, they reunite to make another trip from Scotland to South Africa in ‘Long Way Down’.

Having never heard of this series, I found it to be rather interesting. This is filmed documentary style as it originally aired in the UK with six episodes. With the DVD release, it has been expanded to 10 episodes. It is great that both McGregor and Boorman decide that some of this is being done for charity. They travel through countries the group travel in is: Scotland, England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. Their main goal is to get to Cape Town, South Africa in a matter of 3 months.

The second and third episodes in the series were interesting for a number of reasons. For one they showed how hard it is to travel in Africa due to politics. Then add the terrible weather for bikers to the mix. Add Ewan’s wife Eve to the mix and it adds another element that puts a strain on the dynamics of this group.
