King Cobra Blu-ray Review
Based on a stranger-than-fiction true story, King Cobra is a deliciously dark, twisted plunge into the behind-the-scenes world of the pornography industry. It’s 2006, YouTube is in its infancy, and internet porn is still behind a paywall. Taking the stage name Brent Corrigan, a fresh-faced, wannabe adult video performer (Garrett Clayton) is molded into a star by Stephen (Christian Slater, Mr. Robot), a closeted gay porn mogul who runs the skin flick empire Cobra Video from his seemingly ordinary suburban home. But as Brent’s rise and demands for more money put him at odds with his boss, he also attracts the attention of a rival producer (James Franco) and his unstable lover (Keegan Allen) who will stop at nothing to squash Cobra Video and steal its number one star. Co-starring Alicia Silverstone and Molly Ringwald, King Cobra is part delirious, tabloid-shocker satire, part American tragedy.

“King Cobra” has gotten lots of negative feedback, and that’s a shame because I really enjoyed this film. Christian Slater could have easily portrayed porn producer Steven as a sleazy predator, but instead we see a versatile character: a closeted gay man bemoaning his lost youth, nagged by his sister, and an angry control freak who erupts when his protege Brent Corrigan/Sean Lockhart (Garrett Clayton) tries to assert himself. Clayton plays off his Disney charm and adds the vulnerability of a teenager that has no idea what he has gotten himself into. This could have been a thankless role, especially considering how much heat the real-life Brent Corrigan got (unfairly) during the crime investigation, but Clayton makes you root for him to his happy conclusion. James Franco has the time of his life playing the volatile Joe Kerekes to the hilt.
Movie Content: 8/10
The print is presented in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 with a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. I found “King Cobra” to have a nice looking video presentation. With a healthy budget, they can bring the world of the internet gay porn to life. Colors are fantastic really fitting. Fleshtones are accurate and natural. Details are excellent, providing even some of the minute details on screen.
Video Quality: 9/10
The audio mix is presented in DTS-HD MA lossless 5.1 mix. “King Cobra” is not going to really impress you in terms of having a sound design that fills the entire soundfield. Where the mix does shine is in the score which I felt really went along well with the film. There are some sound effects here with the soundtrack and there that make their way into the soundfield, but not as much as I would of hoped. Dialogue is handled very well with a nice dynamic range with no issues.

“King Cobra” is quite an interesting movie is that something you don’t want to do in the porn industry. Sex, minors, and powers are corruptible. However, the clean movie will give a great benefits for right audience.
