It’s unfair to label this show as an African-American “Sex In The City”. The women do have their relationship ups and downs, but they have so much more to comment on than that. I love the sniping that goes on between Toni (Jill Jones), the golddigger, and ghetto fabulous Maya (Golden Brooks); it just goes to prove that class discrimination exists among all races. I also appreciate that they don’t shy away from discussions about problems among African-Americans. In particular, there was an episode where Toni rejected a rich suitor because he was very dark-complexioned, and Joan (Tracy Ellis Ross) admonished her for having a color complex. The only quarrel I have with the show are the characters William (Reginald C. Hayes) and Lynn (Persia White). William comes off as a sterotypical corporate guy in a suit, and Lynn’s character hasn’t been developed enough to know who she is yet. Otherwise, with more care taken on the writing, this could be a great show.

Final Thoughts

My hat is off to Kelsey Grammer that chose to feature African American woman in a positive light. “Friends” show a lot of clowning that was way over the top. I’m gonna spread the word on this show “Girlfriends”, its a nice funny show and its harmless.
