‘Dolphins’ Blu-ray Review
IMAX documentaries have been very stunning presentations when viewing them in an IMAX theater. As we see more of these films being released on Blu-ray, their stunning presentation translates very well on the high definition format. I have seen all kinds of IMAX films involving animals to great expeditions. Director Greg MacGillivray has brought some really good movies to the IMAX experience over the last few years.
One of several Greg MacGillivray’s IMAX documentaries would be released in high definition on Blu-ray. Image Entertainment brings us ‘Dolphins’ from the IMAX experience in all its glory looking so ever beautiful. If you want to demo off your setup and show off the capabilities of Blu-ray ‘Dolphins’ is a good example of a film that would be showcase material. Pierce Brosnan also provides narration for the film.
‘Dolphins’ is a very good documentary as we learn about the dolphin species. It is interesting to learn how they communicate with each other, mate, and search for food in the ocean. We also learn as to how close the dolphin species is to the mammal species. They also tell us the dangers that dolphins face and how they over come those. In one of the scenes a dolphin takes on a hammerhead shark head on. It is utterly amazing on how fearful dolphins can be. They can also sense upon immediately meeting a creature if it is a threat.
The documentary also touches on how dolphins are used in the entertainment world. There is discussion on how high the dolphins can leap in the air out of water which is rather amazing due to gravity. A lot of this is due to the strength that the dolphins encompass. This is a very interesting documentary that stays very engaging throughout the 40 minute presentation.
Movie Content: 4/5
The print is presented in 1080p/AVC with a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. Colors are stunning with a very rich color palette. Colors are bold and deep. The sharp colors bring out the details of the print. The print is rather clean with a few instances of print damage. For the most part this is a very stunning image.
Video Quality: 4/5
Audio is presented in DTS HD MA lossless 5.1 mix. While the surrounds aren’t as engaging as you would expect from an IMAX documentary, they are rather immersive. The times the surrounds are engaged, you do feel like a part of the IMAX experience. Dialogue is very clean through the center channel. This is a well balanced mix with the addition of Pierce Brosnan’s narration and the use of Sting’s music for the soundtrack.
Audio Quality: 4/5
- The Making Of “Dolphins
‘Dolphins’ is a very good IMAX film that offers a ton of information about the dolphin species in a matter of 40 minutes. While special features are on the lighter side, the Making of Dolphins documentary is a nice addition. On Blu-ray, the video and audio presentation is top quality. I highly recommend ‘Dolphins’ to any fans of the species and more so to those that love IMAX films in their living room.
Overall Rating: 4/5
