Cook Off! Blu-ray Review
Reality-show shenanigans mix with the fiery and fierce world of competitive baking in the deliciously sly mockumentary COOK OFF! As a buffet of quirky contestants prepare for the renowned Van Rookle Farms Cooking Contest, the heat is on to win the one-million-dollar prize. The filmmakers follow them as the foodie media and celebrity judges descend on a hotel convention area to see which contestants rise, which ones fall, who will reveal their true nature, and who will find love with the contest’s costumed Muffin Man mascot. Costarring a cast of improv geniuses including Cathryn Michon, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Melissa McCarthy, Ben Falcone, Gary Anthony Williams, Niecy Nash, Diedrich Bader, Stephen Root, and Sam Pancake, the zesty COOK OFF! is an affectionate nod to ordinary Americans who believe they’re one dollop of spray cheese away from achieving their dreams.

Van Rookle Farms sponsors an annual cook off event with a prize of one million dollars. It has 50 contestants. The film builds the character of 5 contestants and then introduces us to two more. They stereotype people of various regions. The script played to the strength of the actresses. I especially loved Jennifer Elise Cox resurrecting Jan Brady. Melissa McCarthy whose face is featured in the middle, actually had a small role as compared to the other contestants. This movie has it all, mother-daughter drama, sibling rivalry, heartache and love lost and found. I will watch it again. My advice is to go in knowing this is a send up of every cooking show you’ve ever seen, with the reverence of say…Airplane.
Movie Quality: 7/10
The print is presented in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The print looks very good throughout without any apparent issues. Colors are vibrant and carry pop which brings out the fine details. The detailed scenes stand out very well. Blacks are deep. I found the print to be crystal clear with no artifacts or print damage. There is a nice mixture of outside and inside scenes with ‘Dirty Grandpa’, but the outside scenes use of natural lighting really shows off the print.
Print Quality: 9/10
The audio is presented in a DTS-HD MA l0ssless 5.1 mix. With many comedies, they never truly take advantage of the soundfield. The same can be said in some instances with ‘Cook Off!’ considering that it is more of a front heavy experience. When the soundtrack comes into play, especially during the party scenes, it really fills up the soundfield. Dialogue is clear and crisp through the center channel.
