One of the funniest, most heartwarming films of the year” (William Bibbiani, Crave Online). Certified Fresh on RottenTomatoes.com, this outrageous family comedy tells the story of two overly imaginative best friends, George (Kevin Hart) and Harold (Thomas Middleditch), who hypnotize their principal (Ed Helms) into thinking he’s the hero from their comic books: Captain Underpants. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie also features the voice talent of Nick Kroll as Professor Poopypants.

‘Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie’ was an overall funny and entertaining experience. Not only is this a fun film for kids but it is fun for any age demographic. There are plenty jokes for the youngsters and plenty jokes for the adults and ultimately, it is fun for all ages. For a movie titled Captain Underpants, it is impressively done well from its humor, to its animation, as well as its production. To be completely honest, I hope this is the start of a fun series that has a plethora of possible sequels in its arsenal.

Print/Audio Quality

The print is presented in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 with a 2:40:1 aspect ratio. The animation in ‘Captain Underpants’ is wonderfully detailed and executed in so many ways it would take a long time to properly describe them. Another thing I particularly liked were the subtle changes in the backgrounds as evening approached in some scenes; you could feel the sun slowly beginning to set with the ever-so-slight lengthening of shadows and changes in the hue of the sky. Equal detail was given to the way the characters moved and the things they did. Black levels are strong throughout the film. Black levels come off looking rather inky. Color is vibrant and bold really making the image pop throughout. Attention to details is one area where this print excels in and continually shows that Dreamworks engineers have done an excellent job.
Print Quality: 10/10

The audio is presented in DTS-HD MA lossless 5.1 mix. This is a very robust audio mix that really takes advantage of your audio setup. When the surrounds are used with sound effects such as subtle noises in the office, to the adventure that the boys go on, and the soundtrack this packs a punch. The soundtrack also comes into play quite a bit throughout the ‘Captain Underpants’ really adds to the film. There will be no disappointments at all. There is a nice amount of depth through the center channel for dialogue.

Final Thoughts

While this movie might not be for everyone, it can be classified as one of Dreamworks’s best movie in a while that’s not a sequel. If you’re a huge fan of the books, I recommend checking out this movie!
